Robert Redford has signed on to play Dan Rather in ‘Truth’, screenwriter James Vanderbilt’s directorial debut.

The film will be based on Mary Mapes’ memoir ‘Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power.’  The book focused on “the firestorm that erupted in September of 2004 after Rather reported that George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, a report that was based on documents that turned out to be forgeries.” Blanchett is set to play Rather’s producer, Mary Mapes who was fired due to the ensuing scandal. “Mapes was accused of lapses in judgment and was fired, while Rather’s career and reputation were jeopardized.”
