Earlier this month it was reported that that Christoph Waltz was in talks to play the main villain in the upcoming
Bond 24, but there was no word on who his character might be. Now The Daily Mail reports that Waltz’s role is an iconic one, as he will apparently be taking on the rold of Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
For those not in the know, the original Blofeld was the head of SPECTRE, a global criminal organization. Blofeld was known for his white Turkish Angora cat and was played by Donald Pleasence, Telly Savages & Max Von Sydow. It has long been believed that Quantum from Casino Royale & Quantum of Solace is the modern contintuity’s take on SPECTRE, which would possibly mean that Blofeld will be on top of that group.
The site notes that the producers have “changed the character to fit in with the new-look 007″ and that “the new Blofeld will be just as sinister as earlier incarnations but will be more sophisticated and less campy.” The latter refers to the fact that Blofeld became so iconic that many of his characteristics became the cliches of villainous supersedes such as Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers movies.
If the rumors are true, Waltz will join Daniel Craig, Lea Seydoux, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw in the Sam Mendes-directed film.
Bond 24 is set to be released in 2015.
