Fox certainly seems to have caught a case of British Remake Fever. First they took the BBC drama Broadchurch and made their own version, a ten part mystery named Gracepoint. Next up will be a U.S. version of the hit detective drama Luther.
Fox will be working with original creator Neil Cross on the new project. The network has given a pilot commitment to the show and Cross will be the writer for that pilot.
Idris Elba, star of the original drama, is not expected to be onscreen for the new American version. He is rumored though to have a role as an executive producer. Elba received critical acclaim as the titular troubled detective who was haunted by his wife’s murder and lost himself in his work.
Gracepoint has debuted to mixed reviews and so-so ratings for the Fox network. Even with original Broadchurch star David Tennant on board, it seems like the drama had a tough time finding an audience. Fox is probably hoping to turn that around with the Luther remake.
This isn’t Neil Cross’s first foray into American television. He was the creator and executive producer of the NBC pirate series Crossbones that aired this past summer.
